Dr. Christine Szymanski is a Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences and in the Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology. She is also an AITF iCORE Strategic Chair in Bacterial Glycomics. Dr. Szymanski, together with Dr. Feldman, are founders of VaxAlta Inc., a company that focuses on the use of bacterial glycoengineering to develop vaccines for food safety and animal health applications. The Szymanski group uses multidisciplinary approaches to 1) characterize pathways responsible for generating bacterial glycoconjugates, and 2) exploit viral recognition proteins that bind to these structures to produce novel therapeutics and diagnostics. These studies are now expanding to the analyses of carbohydrate metabolism and glycan processing during health and disease.
