Glen D. Armstrong received a B.Sc. in 1974 and M.Sc. in 1976 in Biology from Carleton University and his Ph.D. in 1980 in Biochemistry from the University of Alberta under the supervision of Professor William Paranchych. Subsequently, Dr. Armstrong was a Postdoctoral Fellow under the supervision of Professor Morley D. Hollenberg at the University of Calgary (1980–1983). In 1983, he took a position in the Department of Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases at the University of Alberta as an Assistant Professor and in 1990 was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure. Dr. Armstrong was promoted to Professor in 1997 in the Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Alberta and became Professor and Head of the Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Infectious Diseases at the University of Calgary in 2003. Group research interests are in the area of bacterial pathogenesis as it relates to novel drug and vaccine discovery. In particular Dr. Armstrong’s research focusses on the colonization and pathogenic strategies employed by enterovirulent pathogens including, enteropathogenic E. coli, enterohemorrhagic E. coli O157:H7, Campylobacter jejuni, and Clostridium difficile. For several years, the group has carried out studies related to discovering complex carbohydrate-based drugs for preventing the Shiga toxin-mediated kidney failure that sometimes follows an E. coli O157:H7 infection. More recently, his work has focused on a program of testing novel drugs for treating Clostridium difficile infections in hospitalized patients. Recognitions include an Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research Postdoctoral Fellowship and a Charles H. Best Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship. Dr. Armstrong is profiled in Patent Portraits — A Celebration of Inventions and Patents from the University of Alberta, and the Canadian Who’s Who. In 2011 he and four colleagues were co-recipients of the Brockhouse Canada Prize for Interdisciplinary Research in Science and Engineering from NSERC.
