Steven P. Smith received his B.Sc. in Biochemistry from Western University in 1993 and his Ph.D. in Biochemistry under the supervision of Professor Gary Shaw at Western in 1998. He was a Burroughs Wellcome Hitchings-Elion and CIHR postdoctoral fellow at the University of Oxford (1998-2001) under the tutelage of Professor Iain Campbell before joining Queen’s University as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biochemistry in 2001. He was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in 2007 and is currently is a Professor in the Department of Biomedical and Molecular Sciences. Group research interests are focused on elucidating the molecular mechanisms involved in regulating macromolecular complex assembly and function associated with bacterial pathogenesis, cancer, and biomass degradation. Group expertise comprises complementary structural biology approaches (i.e., NMR spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, small-angle X-ray scattering), and biophysical and biochemical methodologies. Recognitions include a CIHR New Investigator Award and a Queen’s Chancellor’s Research Award.
