A Snapshot of Sugar Science: Highlights from the 2026 Canadian Glycomics Symposium

Posted: June 10, 2026

From May 12–14, GlycoNet welcomed 194 researchers, trainees, industry partners, and collaborators from Canada and around the world to beautiful Canmore, Alberta, for the 9th Canadian Glycomics Symposium.

Over three days, attendees shared discoveries, built new connections, and explored how glycomics (the study of complex sugars called glycans) is advancing solutions to challenges in health, biotechnology, and beyond. The symposium featured eight keynotes, 20 selected talks, 13 lightning talks, and 89 posters, including presenters from Australia, Austria, France, Japan, Portugal, Taiwan, the UK, and United States.

“One of GlycoNet’s greatest strengths is the community we have built together, and each year this symposium provides an opportunity to connect in person. The enthusiasm, scientific excellence, and collaborative spirit throughout the symposium demonstrate the incredible momentum of glycomics in Canada and beyond.”

— Dr. Elizabeth Nanak, CEO, GlycoNet

Across the glycoscience spectrum

This year’s program highlighted advances across a wide range of disciplines, including glycoproteomics, host-pathogen interactions, drug delivery, cancer research, neurodegenerative disease, glycoengineering, and structural glycobiology. Researchers gathered throughout the sessions to discuss new findings, exchange ideas, and explore opportunities for future collaboration.

“The breadth and quality of research presented at this year’s symposium demonstrate how rapidly glycoscience is advancing. From new analytical approaches to emerging therapeutic applications, the work shared here highlights the essential role of glycans in addressing some of the most important questions in health and biotechnology. It is encouraging to see so many researchers pushing the field forward in innovative ways.”

— Dr. Warren Wakarchuk, Scientific Director, GlycoNet

Trainees and early-career researchers played a prominent role throughout the meeting, sharing their work through selected and lightning talks, as well as at the two poster sessions, which drew strong participation. Two trainee-focused workshops on intellectual property and project management were also included in the program to support professional development.

In recognition of outstanding research, GlycoNet presented three poster awards:

  • First Place: Luciani Mery, Université de Montréal
  • Runners-up: John Monyror, University of Alberta  & Myaa Ghadie, University of Alberta

“I was truly impressed by the quality of the presentations and the diversity of the research shared throughout the symposium. I am very grateful to the organizers for creating such an inspiring and welcoming environment, bringing together a community of researchers passionate about glycoscience. Receiving the poster award made this experience even more special. It was a meaningful recognition for our work and a strong encouragement.”

Strengthening connections

Beyond the scientific program, the symposium provided valuable opportunities for networking, mentorship, and community building to spark new ideas and collaborations. From the presentations and poster sessions to thought-provoking conversations throughout the meeting, the event highlighted the importance of bringing the glycoscience community together.

“The Canadian Glycomics Symposium was a truly excellent meeting, featuring outstanding talks and a very high scientific level throughout. I greatly enjoyed both the discussions with peers and the inspiring setting in beautiful Canmore.”

— Dr. Rebekka Wild, CNRS Researcher & Team Leader, Institut de Biologie Structurale

“Attending the 9th Canadian Glycomics Symposium in Canmore reminded me why I entered the field in the first place. Interesting (glyco)science, fantastic colleagues and altogether a great atmosphere in a friendly and stimulating environment.”

— Dr. Morten Thaysen-Andersen, Professor, Macquarie University
