The Canadian Glycomics Network (GlycoNet) recently welcomed six trainees that will make up the Trainee Association Executive Committee (GTA-EC) for 2019-2020. The GTA-EC is a collective voice for Network trainees, including postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, undergraduate students, research associates, and technicians. Working closely with GlycoNet\u2019s management team, the new committee members will advocate for the welfare and interests of fellow trainees. They will also plan activities that will drive educational and research excellence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe GlycoNet Trainee Association Executive Committee is an essential channel for communication between trainees and GlycoNet,\u201d says Ryan Sweeney, Chair of the GTA-EC. \u201cWe advocate for trainees\u2019 concerns while sharing Network\u2019s key messages and information with trainees. We support trainees\u2019 development by providing various resources, for example, workshops, networking events, award opportunities, etc., that enhance their experience at GlycoNet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On September 6, the GTA-EC gathered at GlycoNet\u2019s\nheadquarters to brainstorm learning opportunities for fellow trainees. In particular, the committee\nproposed several initiatives to engage Network trainees and promote their\nresearch to the broader scientific community. Some ideas include\nglycomics-themed social media contests, a monthly trainee Q&A corner, webinars\nfocused on a broad range of subjects, blog posts on glycomics research or\ncareer development, and more. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In\naddition, the GTA-EC provided input on the 2020 Canadian Glycomics Symposium.\nThe committee reviewed attendees\u2019 feedback from last year\u2019s event and identified\nstrategic improvements that could make the upcoming edition of the conference\neven more meaningful to the development of the next generation of glycomics\nscientists. Potential formats for networking sessions and topics for\nprofessional development workshops were discussed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vice Chair:<\/strong> Nolan Frame, master\u2019s student, Monteiro lab<\/a>, University of Guelph \u2013 characterizing bacterial cell wall polysaccharides for use as a glycoconjugate-based vaccine towards traveler\u2019s diarrhea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Secretary:<\/strong> Akay Akohwarien, technician, Phenix Lab<\/a>, University of Saskatchewan \u2013 synthesizing molecules that could potentially be used as imaging agents for the early detection of Parkinson\u2019s disease. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Communications Officer<\/strong>: Revathi Reddy<\/a>, master\u2019s student, Derda lab<\/a>, University of Alberta \u2013 developing a more cost-effective and accurate technology for serological diagnosis of infectious diseases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Symposium representative: <\/strong>Emily Rodrigues, PhD candidate, Macauley lab<\/a>, University of Alberta \u2013 developing methods to manipulate the immune system by controlling the interactions between Siglec (a family of carbohydrate-binding proteins) and certain sialic acids in the human body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Member at large:<\/strong> William Scott, technician, Weadge lab<\/a>, Wilfrid Laurier University \u2013 elucidating the structures of the key enzymes responsible for drug-resistance in microbes that cause infections such as meningitis, pneumonia, or periodontal diseases. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
