The newly established Canadian Glycomics Network (GlycoNet) is holding\u00a0its\u00a0official launch on Friday, April 10 at the University of Alberta.<\/p>\n
GlycoNet is one of Canada\u2019s new Networks of Centres of Excellence, bringing\u00a0together a network of 64 researchers at 22 institutions, as well as numerous industry and academic partners, to\u00a0develop\u00a0solutions to unmet health needs through glycomics research.<\/p>\n
The network is a $38-million, pan-Canadian, multi-institutional\u00a0initiative hosted by the University of Alberta and supported by multiple funding sources, including the federal Networks of Centres of Excellence program and Alberta Innovates Technology Futures.<\/p>\n
Glycomics is a multidisciplinary research area focusing on the role of carbohydrates in living cells. Research in this area will provide novel solutions to many human health issues, including infectious and chronic diseases. Glycomics research and development has already led to the successful commercialization of an anti-influenza drug\u00a0and treatments for diseases such as\u00a0diabetes. Glycomics is a growing field of interest throughout the world, and through GlycoNet, Canada will further enhance its international leadership in the field and translate research into tangible social benefits.<\/p>\n
The launch event will be held at the Li Ka Shing Centre (University of Alberta) in the Degner Lecture Theatre, beginning at 10:30 am. The event will be emceed by former host of Daily Planet<\/em> et \u00e0 Quirks and Quarks<\/em>, Jay Ingram, and will emphasize the potential of glycomics for the future of health care in Alberta and Canada.
