It has many causes: from smoking, diabetes, high blood pressure, to air pollution, and rare conditions such as cardiac amyloidosis. Of all the tissues in the heart, cardiomyocytes are one the most important muscles groups to keep the heart functioning.<\/p><p>As the chief cell type of the heart, cardiomyocytes are responsible for generating contractile force, keeping blood pumping throughout the body. When these muscle cells die, heart failure occurs\u00a0with devastating results.<\/p><p>But GlycoNet Investigators\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/med.uottawa.ca\/bmi\/en\/people\/nemer-mona\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Mona Nemer<\/a>\u00a0from the University of Ottawa and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/guindonsgroup.weebly.com\/yvan-guindon.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Yvan Guindon<\/a>\u00a0from IRCM now have discovered molecules that could potentially protect cardiomyocytes from death.\u00a0<\/p><p>\u201cIf we treat cardiac cells with these molecules, we can prevent the cardiac cells from dying in response to anti-cancer treatment. This means we can preserve cardiac function and prevent heart failure,\u201d says Nemer.\u00a0<\/p><p>While many things can lead to heart\u00a0failure, including conditions such as\u00a0hypertension, hardening of arteries,\u00a0or complications from diabetes,\u00a0the researchers focus on heart failure\u00a0caused by chemotherapy.<\/p><p>\u201cSome very effective anti-cancer\u00a0drugs cannot be used at their\u00a0optimal dose or with many people\u00a0because it\u2019s known they would\u00a0lead to heart failure,\u201d says Nemer.\u00a0\u201cInitially we set out to develop a way to protect the heart against\u00a0heart failure that is induced by\u00a0cancer treatment. We\u2019re hoping\u00a0that any developments will also\u00a0be expanded to other types of\u00a0heart failure.\u201d<\/p><p>The team has already\u00a0demonstrated the success of their\u00a0lead molecule both in culture and\u00a0in animal testing, and is hoping\u00a0to continue to advance towards\u00a0treatment of a disease that has\u00a0unmet clinical needs. Heart failure\u00a0is the number one reason for\u00a0hospitalization in people over 65.<\/p><p>\u201cIt\u2019s a very serious condition,\u201d says\u00a0Nemer. \u201cRight now, there are no\u00a0therapies available to stop, slow\u00a0down, or cure heart failure. As a\u00a0result, it\u2019s a diagnosis that can be\u00a0worse than some cancers. Fifty per\u00a0cent of the individuals diagnosed\u00a0with heart failure will die within\u00a0five years.\u201d<\/p><p>Whether the drug could also\u00a0reverse heart failure once it has\u00a0progressed will determine the\u00a0breadth of application of the drug,\u00a0and it\u2019s something the team is still\u00a0investigating.<\/p><p>\u201cThe results are very encouraging,\u00a0showing that it can prevent the onset\u00a0of heart failure in conditions where\u00a0the heart has already started to go\u00a0down that path,\u201d says Nemer. \u201cSome\u00a0of the experiments we\u2019d like to do\u00a0moving forward are to see the extent\u00a0to which the drug can be effective \u2013\u00a0can it be given at mid-course heart\u00a0failure, at end-stage? Are we able to\u00a0stabilize once the disease has set in\u00a0and at what stage?\u201d<\/p><p>The group will also be doing more\u00a0extensive pre-clinical studies, with\u00a0the hopes of eventually moving to\u00a0clinical studies. Nemer credits their\u00a0success so far to fundamental studies\u00a0in carbohydrate chemistry and in the\u00a0effects of anti-cancer drugs, which\u00a0were applied together thanks to the\u00a0collaboration enabled by GlycoNet.<\/p><p>\u201cA project like this cannot be carried out except with a multidisciplinary team because it\u2019s an iterative process,\u201d she says. \u201cThat\u2019s the goal of a network like GlycoNet \u2013 to take basic discoveries and enable their translation into innovations that can be of socioeconomic
