The Royal Society of Canada (RSC) recently announced on September 4th that it has elected 102 new Fellows and welcomed 59 new Members to the College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists. One of those is GlycoNet investigator Dr. Matthew Macauley, professor at the University of Alberta.

Founded in 1882 as Canada’s national academy, the RSC fosters research and education across the arts, humanities, and sciences. The College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists recognizes exceptional emerging and mid-career leaders who bring fresh perspectives and a multigenerational capacity to address major challenges and seize new opportunities across disciplines.

Dr. Macauley is a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Chemical Glycoimmunology and the Raymond U. Lemieux Chair of Carbohydrate Chemistry. His research program investigates the biological roles of carbohydrates and how they control immune cells. These discoveries have yielded important insights into Alzheimer’s disease and cancer, and the innovative tools developed by his lab are being widely adopted by research groups around the world.

On Friday, November 14, 2025, the RSC will induct the 2025 Fellows and Members of the RSC College at a ceremony as part of the Celebration of Excellence and Engagement in Montréal, Québec.
