Dr. Matthew Macauley, professor in the Faculty of Science and GlycoNet investigator, was recognized at the University of Alberta’s 2025 Innovation Awards for the licensing of a CD33 splicing cell-based screening assay developed by his research group.
Hosted annually by the U of A’s Technology Transfer Services (TTS) team, the Innovation Awards celebrate researchers who are translating academic discoveries into tools, technologies, and solutions with real-world impact.
Dr. Macauley’s licensed technology supports the study of CD33, a protein implicated in immune regulation and neurodegenerative disease, including Alzheimer’s disease. The assay enables cell-based screening approaches that advance research into antibody function and immune cell behavior, providing a platform for both academic and industry use.
The 2025 Innovation Awards were held on November 21, bringing together innovators from across the university to celebrate achievements across health sciences, natural and applied sciences, and the social sciences and humanities.
